Pick Your Power

May 12, 2019 What do wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and hydro power all have in common? You're right - they're all forms of renewable energy. Better than that, taken together they all put the kibosh on coal-produced energy this past April. Expectations are that they'll do the same thing in May. Best of all, this is the first time that's ever happened, and it won't be the last. According to Dennis Wamsted, of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), "Five years ago this never would have been close to happening. The transition that's going on in the electric sector in the United States has been phenomenal." Renewable forms of energy are expected to enjoy sporadic dominance over coal during the rest of 2019 and 2020.The IEEFA is a non-profit organization that supports the transition to renewable energy.  Their analysis indicates that renewables will surpass the roughly 2000 to 2200 thousand megawatt hours per day generated ...

Beyond the Tipping Point

April 25, 2013 - In the world as we presently know it, the truth seems to sneak up on us.   Media of every description trumpet their version of reality, and after hearing it long enough and often enough, it becomes as familiar as an old sweater.    Yes, there’s a niggling at the back of the brain that asks “But what about A, B, or C?”   That question, along with so many others, never gets asked – or answered – in the media, and that is supposed to help us forget our doubts.   Time passes, doubts fade away to nothing, then all of a sudden – there it is!   THAT’S what we thought all long.     The truth has snuck up on us once again. Such, I would contend, is the case with the story of renewable energy.   HA! says the fossil fuel industry.   They can never catch up with us.   We have all those lovely government subsidies, people love to drive all those gas-guzzling cars, we are the most profitable business in the world.   Consu...

It's All Come Down to This

February 4, 2013 - It's great to be back. There's a lot going on: lots of good science finally coming to fruition ,a president who knows what needs to be done who, now that he's been re-elected; will finally do what needs to be done; most of the continent of Australia either on fire or flooding; much of eastern China - including Beijing - more and more frequently swathed in enough pollution to shorten lives significantly. A mixed bag, that's for sure. It does seem as though there's a distinct possibility the United States may finally begin taking its environmental responsibilities seriously. Too little, too late? Only time will tell. But the nice people at Bloomberg New Energy Finance tell us that CO2 emissions have fallen by 13% in the past five years here in the U.S., putting them at their lowest levels since 1994. This has been accomplished through the application of energy-saving technologies, and a doubling in the use of renewable energy. According to Li...
